What to do in the event of a traffic accident abroad

In a member state of the EEA, Switzerland or Andorra if caused by a motor vehicle with foreign registration plates 

  • call the Traffic Police
  • obtain a Police Report for the Traffic Accident
  • Where no mandatory police intervention is required, fill in a European Accident Report Form
  • state the date of the traffic accident
  • registration number of the responsible vehicle
  • make and model of the responsible vehicle
  • number of the MTPL policy and the country where it is issued. If possible, obtain a copy of the insurance policy or the name of the Iinsurer
  • where possible, request the signature of the responsible driver

If you have time, find the nearest office of the responsible driver’s company and file your claim directly with them.

If you have to return to Bulgaria and this is not possible, find the representative of the insurance company of the responsible driver for the territory of Bulgaria. File your claim directly with them.

If you are unable to identify the responsible driver’s insurer, approach the Information Centre of the Guarantee Fund for further investigation.

  • call the Traffic Police
  • obtain a Police Report for the Traffic Accident
  •  Where no mandatory police intervention is required, fill in a European Accident Report Form
  • state the date of the traffic accident
  • registration number of the responsible vehicle
  • make and model of the responsible vehicle
  • number of the MTPL policy and the country where it is issued. If possible, obtain a copy of the insurance policy or the name of the Insurer
  • where possible, request the signature of the responsible driver

Turn to the Compensation Body of the Republic of Bulgaria for filing a claim.

In a third country outside the EEA

Turn to the Guarantee Fund of the country where the traffic accident happened.
